What is Piña Colada?

The Piña Colada originates from Puerto Rico and has been the country's official national drink since 1978. Its name literally means „"strained pineapple"” – and it is the pineapple juice that gives it its characteristic tropical flavor.

This is a simple cocktail, based on three main ingredients:

  • white rum,
  • pineapple juice,
  • coconut milk.

The secret lies in the proportions and quality of the ingredients.

Ingredients (1 serving):

  • 60 ml (2 oz) white rum
  • 90 ml (3 ounces) pineapple juice
  • 60 ml (2 ounces) coconut milk
  • ice
  • pineapple pieces (optional)

Preparation:

  1. Pour rum, pineapple juice and coconut milk into a shaker.
  2. Add a few ice cubes.
  3. Shake vigorously for about 10–15 seconds.
  4. Pour the cocktail into a tall glass.
  5. Garnish with a pineapple slice or piece of fresh fruit.

Ready. Piña Colada tastes best well chilled, served in a tall hurricane glass or a classic long drink glass.

How to make a Piña Colada without a shaker?

Don't have a shaker? No worries.

A screw-top jar or bottle will suffice.

You can also make a frozen version: blend all ingredients with more ice. You'll achieve a thicker, more dessert-like consistency.

What makes a Piña Colada taste really good?

Two elements are key:

  1. Good quality pineapple juice
Avoid watered-down drinks made from concentrate. 100% pressed juice offers a brighter, more natural flavor and a better balance of sweetness and acidity.

  1. The right proportion of coconut milk
Too much and the drink will be heavy and fatty.
Too little – it will lose its creamy character.

A well-balanced Piña Colada should be:

  • creamy but not muddy,
  • sweet, but not overdone,
  • refreshing despite its density.

Piña Colada – a tropical classic made at home

The Piña Colada is one of those drinks that proves that simplicity works. Three ingredients, a few ice cubes, and a moment of shaking are enough to transport your thoughts to warmer places.

If you like to experiment, you can try a version with fresh mint, a dash of lime juice, or change the proportions to suit your preferences. However, the base always remains the same: rum, pineapple, and coconut.

Try the classic version and see why this drink has remained in style for years. 🍍🥥🍹
